I drew the girl away and told the counselor I would talk with the girl. The young lady and I went to a more private place where we could talk. We began discussing exercise and why she wanted to run. Hopefully she listened as I talked about training and other things.
This lead to more discussion about why she wanted to lose weight, even without saying anything about it, this girl began to show her unhappiness in her life through her face and tones. One phrase reverberated through my mind, “You get used to it.†She said this over and over again as she talked about the appearances she must present to be accepted in life, from her grandparents, mother, dance teacher, boys, etc. I heard the classic phrase, if I just lose 5, 10, 15 pounds, boys will like me. I need to look like this for the boys to like me. In probably at least ½ of conversation, I never heard this girl talk about what she liked or disliked. However, I now know more about her grandparents and mothers expectations for this girl then her likes and dislikes.
